The basis for maintaining compliance with OSHA standards is to properly understand the regulations as they apply to a particular facility. Yet, this simple-sounding task can be very difficult, as is evidenced by the number of violations regularly handed out by OSHA inspectors. In 2002, OSHA conducted over 26,000 inspections and handed out over $75 million in penalties to companies found in violation of OSHA standards. The most frequently cited violations in 2002 included hazard communication, respiratory protection, lockout/tagout, electrical safety, bloodborne pathogens, and personal protective equipment. Every facility faces compliance requirements when it comes to these OSHA standards, among many others. Knowing how to fulfill these extensive requirements can be very confusing, but is also very necessary to keep employees safe and to avoid sizable fines from OSHA.
